Festival Tour

Design a trip around a Buddhist festival

Why not plan your journey to Bhutan around one of our vibrant Buddhist festivals? It’s a fantastic opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the Buddhist culture and connect with the local community. These festivals, known as Tshechus, are a celebration of Guru Rinpoche, the revered saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. Lasting up to several days, these auspicious events showcase a captivating display of intricately choreographed masked dances. Beyond their religious significance, these festivals also hold great social and familial importance. Locals dress in their finest traditional attire, complete with colorful silk fabrics and exquisite jewelry made from coral and turquoise. Carrying traditional baskets filled with delicious picnic lunches, families come together at the grand dzongs (fortresses) and monasteries to partake in the day-long festivities. While spectators enjoy the vibrant performances, behind the scenes, devoted monks spend weeks preparing for the festival. Through prayer and meditation, they cleanse their spirits in readiness for the celebrations. During the Tshechu, the monks perform mask dances representing enlightened beings from the past. Bhutanese people believe that witnessing these mystical dances is not only visually stunning but also spiritually transformative, guiding individuals towards enlightenment. The major festivals typically occur in March, April, and October. However, if you can’t make it during those months, smaller festivals are held throughout the year in various locations.
